ADULT: Wingspan - 55 - 65mm. A large moth named after the shawl-like pattern on her shoulders. The forewing is very broad and of a variety of sombre browns. The outer edge of the forewings are distinctly scalloped. Undersides of both sets of wings have fawn borders. CHRYSALIS: Found in leaf litter or loose soil. LARVA: Brown with a diamond pattern down the back and oblique stripes along each side. Feeds on the shoots of Hawthorn, Blackthorn, Hazel and Sallow. BEHAVIOUR: Attracted to sugar, aphid honeydew and sap leaking from damaged trees. HABITAT: Found usually in gardens and parks as well as riverbanks and marshy areas. FLIGHT PERIOD: July to September. STATUS: Local throughout but more common in Southern Britain. |
